Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has faced criticism and controversy in recent weeks. She’s been slammed by Republicans and members of her party for comments taken as anti-Semitic, she received an endorsement last week from David Duke – a former Grand Wizard of the KKK – and she and the Democratic party have yet to denounce said endorsement.
Now, a Florida Republican is introducing legislation that would admonish Congresswoman Omar, saying that Democrats missed an opportunity to properly handle the situation.Speaking on the resolution that condemns the remarks made by Omar, Florida Republican Greg Steube said that “Jewish people in America and across the globe deserve better from this legislative body. That is why I’m introducing this resolution – so we as a body can come together in agreement to say anti-Semitism belongs nowhere in the halls of Congress or its Members.”
After the comments made by Omar, which many argued propogated anti-Jewish stereotypes, many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle condemned the remarks. In turn, Democratic leadership introduced a resolution condemning anti-Semitism. However, some Democratic party members argued that Omar was facing disproportionate criticism because of Islamaphobia, so the resolution was broadened, and Steube along with 23 other members of the Republican party voted against the resolution because they felt it overlooked Omar’s comments.

Steube, explained his vote, describing that “instead of specifically addressing the persistent anti-Semitic remarks made by my colleague, House Democrats chose last week to make a mockery of this institution by giving her troubling behavior yet another pass.” So, with his resolution to condemn Omar’s remarks, Steube adds “that the House of Representatives now has an opportunity to consider legislation that directly addresses the growing problem of anti-Semitism that unfortunately exists inside our institution.”
Steube also took to twitter to give Democrats a suggestion on what they should do to handle the situation.
Rep. Omar has repeatedly made anti-Semitic remarks but has yet to face any real punishment from her caucus. If Democrat leadership wants to stand against such rhetoric, they’d remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Don’t you agree?
