The Florida House will most likely approve the new congressional district map today after they rejected a proposal made by Sarasota county lawmakers.
On Monday, House members raised questions about the map developed by staff members and attorneys but in the end they did not make any changes. The only problem is the House and Senate could approve different maps which would force them to reach a final agreement before the special legislative session end on Friday. The only change proposed came from Representative Julio Gonzalez (R-Venice). He sought to keep Sarasota County in one district.
His proposal failed in a voice vote and seemingly did not have a lot of support in the House.

Other lawmakers expressed their frustration with the Supreme Court ruling and they asked how they would know if they were passing a constitutional map.
What they are referring to is the Florida Supreme Court’s decision that the old congressional district map was unconstitutional and the order for it to be redrawn to reflect the anti-gerrymandering “Fair Districts” requirements approved by voters in 2010. The special session to redraw the map started last Monday.
