Now that Marco Rubio has declared he is running for President the race to replace him for US Senate has begun and it is heating up fast.
Earlier on Tuesday we reported Congressman Tom Rooney (R-FL) was strongly considering running for Rubio’s seat and just a few moments ago Congressman Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said he is strongly considering running as well.DeSantis issued the following statement:
Marco Rubio has done a great job in the U.S. Senate. His 2010 campaign inspired me to consider running for office, and I have no doubt that he will make a compelling candidate on the national stage.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
He added:
Both DeSantis and Rooney have been fierce opponents to President Obama’s foreign policy and they have each in their own way done everything they can to counteract it.As it became clear that Sen. Rubio was likely to run for president, I received encouragement to consider running for Senate. Casey and I will use the next several weeks to discuss the race with our friends and supporters and will make a decision in short order.
DeSantis points out what his feelings are about foreign policy in his statement as well:
The country is suffering from stagnation at home and indignities abroad. We need a new generation of leaders who will promote policies that will foster economic growth and alleviate the middle-class squeeze, defend America’s national security against those who threaten our people, reform the culture of Washington, D.C., and reassert the constitutional principles that make our country unique. Whatever shape my future service takes, I look forward to doing my part to help get our country back on track.
FreedomWorks for America is also encouraging DeSantis to run. FreedomWorks spokesman Adam Brandon had the following to say about DeSantis:
Aside from Congressman DeSantis and Congressman Rooney publicly expressing their interested in running, Florida’s Lieutenant Governor, Carlos Lopez-Cantera (R) has been thinking about running as well. Lopez-Cantera is a very close personal friend of Rubio’s, so much so that he stood in his friends and family section during Rubio’s presidential announcement Monday at the Freedom Tower. With Senator Rubio declining to run for reelection, it is crucial that conservatives join together to replace Sen. Rubio with a committed conservative with the courage to fight for limited government and free-market principles. Cong. DeSantis is exactly the kind of courageous conservative we need in the U.S. Senate. DeSantis has been a leader on everything from government reform to eliminating Common Core regulations to ending Congress’s Obamacare exemption, and FreedomWorks activists hope he will run for the Senate in Florida.
I have a feeling this Senate election is going to be very intense and the nation will definitely be watching.
