The ATF dropped their attempt at banning ammunition for now but four House Democrats are not happy about it and decided to try to pass a bill banning the ammunition. They are Eliot Engel (NY-D), Yvette Clarke (NY-D), Carolyn Maloney (NY-D) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-D).
According to The Blaze, Representative Engel introduced the Armor Piercing Bullets Act. He said it would ban the sale of .233-derived, 5.56x45mm NATO rounds. Those bullets are commonly used in the AR-15 rifle. The White House has also vowed to not stop their fight in trying to ban ammunition.
News of the ATF’s proposed ban prompted close to 90,000 comments in which most of them were against the plan. The ammo in question is generally used for sporting purposes.

Engel felt the ATF had it right and wants to implement what they were trying to do as legislation.
He said:
As the ATF rightly pointed out, these rounds can easily be loaded into concealed pistols and other short guns, making them particularly dangerous to police officers. The well-being of the men and woman who protect us should not, and need not, be a partisan issue. I encourage all of my colleagues in Congress to support this obvious measure that will, if enacted, save lives.
Engel went on to say:
There is absolutely no compelling argument to be made for anyone else to have access to them. But the out of touch gun industry lobby is fighting tooth and nail to keep cop-killing ammunition on the streets.
On the other hand, Republican Senators stated the only reason they want to ban the popular cartridge is to make it harder for people to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
In a letter the fifty-three Republican Senators wrote to the ATF they stated:
If law-abiding gun owners cannot obtain rifle ammunition, or face substantial difficulty in finding ammunition available and at reasonable prices because government entities are banning such ammunition, then the Second Amendment is at risk.
