Over the weekend, Israel took fire from Hamas in the form of hundreds of rockets that were directed to the southern part of Israel from Gaza. Members of Florida’s congressional delegation were quick to respond and criticize Hamas. The first to respond were Republican Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Democrat Ted Deutch.
Now, more Florida Lawmakers are siding with Israel and voicing the need to support Israel during this moment that they’ve experienced their most intense fight since 2014.Taking to twitter to share his thoughts, Senator Marco Rubio noted that “I strongly support Israel’s right as a sovereign nation to defend itself against Hamas and other terrorist groups that attack innocent civilians.”
In response to his comments, the American Jewish Committee praised the sunshine state senator by thanking Rubio for his “moral clarity and unequivocal support for Israel as it faces unrelenting violence from Hamas.”

Echoing the condemnation of the attack, Democratic Representative Lois Frankel, a member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and a member of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee with Ros-Lehtinen and Deutch, gave a statement on the matter.
Frankel noted that “I stand with the people of Israel and condemn Hamas’ indiscriminate firing of rockets into civilian areas. Israeli families should not have to seek shelter as sirens sound and rockets target their homes, killing and injuring innocent people.”
She also added that “Israel has every right to defend itself against these terrorist attacks. I’m encouraged by positive reports of a cease-fire and will continue to monitor the situation.”Since then, Hamas has released a statement on the ceasefire, saying that “the Egyptian efforts have resulted in re-enforcing the ceasefire with the Israeli occupation” while thanking “the efforts of Egypt, Qatar, Norway, and UN exerted to stop the Israeli attack.”
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented that “At these times leadership is not doing the easy thing, but the right thing, even if it is hard.”
