This morning, news broke that Southern Israel had been attacked from rockets shot from Palestinian controlled Gaza. It is being called the most intensive Palestinian attack that Israel has seen in years. And, in return, Israel responded to the attack by launching rockets with a series of coordinated airstrikes aimed at Hamas’ television station and other targets.
In response to the attack on Israel, congressional representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who leads the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and who currently sits as the chairwoman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, took to twitter to share her thoughts on what transpired. In the tweet, Ros-Lehtinen commented that “I support Israel’s right to defend herself from attacks by Hamas and other Gaza terrorist groups. These rockets are falling on innocent Israeli communities and I urge responsible nations to condemn these terrorists and help put a stop to their bloodshed.”
In addition, Ted Deutch, who just won his reelection bid, and who has worked closely with Ros-Lehtinen on issues concerning the Middle East, also took to twitter to condemn Hamas for the attacks.

He elaborated, saying that “Hamas responds to targeted Israeli anti-terror operation by indiscriminately firing 300 rockets at Israeli towns and cities. Hamas is a terrorist organization that once again shows utter disregard for the lives of innocent Israelis – and Palestinians.”
The American Jewish Committee thanked Deutch and Ros-Lehtinen for their efforts on Middle Eastern issues, saying that Ros-Lehtinen is “speaking up for Israel as hundreds of rockets fired from Gaza slam into towns and villages in the southern part of the country.” They also thanked Deutch for his “steadfast support of Israel as its people come under attack from Gaza.”
Ros-Lehtinen is retiring from her seat, and Democrat Donna Shalala won the seat last week by defeating Republican Maria Elvira Salazar.
