Within days of Rep. Tom Rooney (R) announcing that he would not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, Florida State Representative Julio Gonzalez, a Senator Marco Rubio ally, began to mull over the possibility of mounting a congressional run.
Gonzalez’s congressional “exploratory” period was short lived, as the orthopedic surgeon has now officially announced that he will seek the Republican nomination to replace outgoing Congressman Rooney.
On March 12, Gonzalez will launch his congressional campaign at The Venice Community Center at 6pm.
Senator Greg Steube (R) has already announced his congressional run, setting the stage for a potentially contentious primary election against the Rubio-backed Gonzalez.
