With Floridians still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Irma, Florida Senator Bill Nelson (D) has filed a bill calling for the U.S. Department of Energy to set up a fuel reserve that would ensure emergency personnel and citizens access to much needed fuel before, during, and after a storm passes.
Considering the fuel shortage experienced during Hurricane Irma after thousands of Floridians hit the highways to avoid the storm, setting up a fuel reserve of 1 million barrels of oil sounds like a great idea.
The bill calls for the fuel supply to be strategically stored in two locations, one on the east coast, and the other on the west coast.
“A Florida gas reserve would not only help prevent some of the gas shortages we saw ahead of Hurricane Irma, but would also help ensure that our first responders have the fuel they need to help people during and after the storm.”- Sen. Bill Nelson said in a written statement (POLITICO)
