Rep. Wenstrub and Senator Jeff Flake were the first individuals to render first aid to Scalise before first responders took over and airlifted the congressman to the hospital.
Senator Flake told reporters that he witnessed a white male carrying a “large gauge rifle.” and when he began shooting, “one staffer was shot in the field” before himself being shot and wounded by a black female Capitol Police officer, who was already shot in the leg.
Flake added that the wounded officer “ran around with a leg wound” and took down the assailant.
“Cindy’s and my thoughts and prayers are with Whip Scalise, the staff, the Capitol Police officers, and the family and friends of those hurt. Our deep appreciation goes out to the Capitol Police and local law enforcement officers for their protection.”-Rep. Dennis Ross (R)
