Republicans keep winning and Democrats keep losing.
The Democratic Party continues to lick its wounds as President Donald Trump’s pick of Judge Neil Gorsuch to replace deceased Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia, was not the choice they wanted to see made.Democrats hoped that under another Clinton administration, tipping the scale on the high court would help propel their liberal ideology. But those hopes were dashed once Trump won the presidency and promised to replace Scalia with someone like-minded.
Gorsuch, a 10th Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals jurist, is perceived by many to be cut from the same cloth as Scalia.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
On the court of appeals, Gorsuch ruled against the Obama administe, ration in two major cases concerning religious liberty, Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius and Little Sisters of the Poor v. Burwell – both of which concerned Christian groups objecting to the ObamaCare contraceptive mandate. His positions were affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Gorsuch, like Scalia, is a textualist and an originalist who believes judges should follow the text and original meaning of the Constitution. He has a record of standing up for religious liberty and swiftly met with approval Tuesday night from conservatives hoping for a Scalia-like pick.
In his remarks alongside the president at the White House, Gorsuch also gave a nod to Scalia, calling him a “lion of the law.” –Fox NewsSenate Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer, who did not shed any crocodiles tears once he heard Trump’s announcement, was quick to draw the line in the sand on Gorsuch’s nomination.
“Make no mistake, Senate Democrats will not simply allow but require an exhaustive, robust, and comprehensive debate on Judge Gorsuch’s fitness to be a Supreme Court Justice.”- Sen. Chuck Schumer
Because Trump and Republicans need 60 votes to confirm Gorsuch, Democrats may attempt to filibuster the vote, which in turn could prompt Republicans to pull the “nuclear option to push Gorsuch through.
If the Republicans move on that option they would only need to garner 51 votes. The GOP currently has a 52-49 advantage over Democrats in the U.S. Senate
But while Democrats continue to sing the political blues, Senate Republicans like Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Florida Senator Marco Rubio are praising Trump’s SCOTUS pick.“Judge Gorsuch is a highly qualified, mainstream jurist, which is why he was unanimously confirmed to the circuit court by the Senate in 2006. By all accounts he has the right temperament and experience for the job, and I’m pleased to see him nominated to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Most importantly, he is committed to the principles of original intent and judicial restraint. This is critical, because too many in the federal judiciary today believe it is appropriate for judges to invent new policies and rights instead of interpreting and defending the Constitution as it is written.
“Unfortunately, Senate Democrats already announced they would oppose any Supreme Court nominee no matter who it is. This obstruction is neither principled nor reasonable, considering we just had an election where the future of the Supreme Court was a central issue not only at the presidential level but in every Senate contest.
On the issue of this Supreme Court nomination specifically, the American people gave the president and the Republican-controlled Senate a mandate to choose a successor to Antonin Scalia. Senate Democrats should accept the results of the election and allow the process to move forward with a vote. I look forward to a fair and thorough confirmation process, and I am confident Judge Gorsuch will be confirmed by the Senate once again, this time to serve on the Supreme Court.”–Sen. Marco Rubio
