Senate Democrats have attacked President Trump’s travel ban, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer gave an emotional speech where he cried alongside immigrants that were affected by the ban.
In the speech, Schumer said that he would be fighting Trump’s executive order “with every fiber of my being.” He stressed that Democrats in the GOP-controlled congress would be working hard against a ban that he called “unconstitutional” and “mean spirited and Un-American.”The issues of National Security and Immigration reform were at the forefront of President Trump’s campaign and, in his effort to curb illegal immigration, President Trump wishes to enlist local police officers to enforce federal immigration law.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Detractors argue that the program promotes racial profiling but, as the Tampa Bay Times reports, “proponents say police departments can help bolster immigration enforcement and prevent criminals from being released back into their neighborhoods.”
In an executive order this past week, President Trump brought new life to the program after he said that local police officers should be involved in the process of “investigation, apprehension, or detention” of illegal immigrants in the United States. Counties in Texas and Massachusetts have shown support for the program but cities like San Francisco and Chicago have opposed any involvement from police in the matter.
A.J. Louderback, Texas’s Jackson County Sheriff, supports the program and explains that “It just seems like good law enforcement to partner with federal law enforcement in this area” because “It takes all of us to do this job.”
