In a news release, Florida Senator Bill Nelson (D) announced that a new standing subcommittee on cybersecurity had been created by the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee as a result of Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 Presidential election that saw President-elect Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton in November. Nelson will also be the ranking Democrat to help lead it.
On Wednesday afternoon, Chairman of the Armed Service Committee, John McCain (R), Senator of Arizona, announced the creation of the panel and also appointed Mike Rounds, Republican Senator of South Dakota, as chairman of the cybersecurity panel.Rounds and Nelson will also be in charge of filling out the rest of the committee and setting its purpose and schedule.
Nelson, a former Senate Intelligence Committee member, said that “In addition to ensuring the proper policies, strategies and resources are in place to defend the country in cyberspace, the new subcommittee will hold the administration accountable if they fail to adequately respond to a future attack.”

A bipartisan effort came about after the accusations of Russia meddling in the election, and members of both parties have even called for stronger sanctions.
Nelson commented that “you can’t just sit on your hands and do nothing” when allegations like this are made. “If we’re going to deter our enemies from attacking us, we have to make it painfully obvious that the consequences are going to be so severe that they won’t want to do it in the first place.”
