Five people were killed at an airport in Fort Lauderdale on Friday by suspected 26 year old gunman Esteban Ruiz Santiago, a U.S. military veteran. Upon being discharged for several infractions, Santiago’s behavior was questioned by family members. One case involved him walking into an Anchorage FBI office “to report that his mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency.” Santiago was described as having “terroristic thoughts” and “he believed he was being influenced by ISIS.” Why these disturbing confessions weren’t further investigated has not been revealed.
Now, federal prosecutors have filed charges that could have Santiago facing the death penalty if he’s convicted.The Miami U.S. Attorney’s office filed a criminal complaint on Saturday accusing the 26 year old of a violent act in an international airport that resulted in five deaths and six people being wounded. The punishment, if found guilty, is death or a prison sentence for life. In addition, Santiago has also been charged with two firearm offenses.

He is being held without bail and is set to make his first court appearance on Monday.
