The argument of whether the U.S. government should close down the naval prison on Guantanamo Bay, Cuba has been resurrected after President-elect Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States.
Trump won the all-important Cuban-American vote by vowing to repeal Obama’s new U.S.-Cuba foreign policy and to keep the naval prison open. Trump could rewrite Obama’s legacy.President Obama wasn’t able to keep his first term campaign promise to close down GITMO, but has been able to dwindled down the number of enemy combatant detainees at the prison from several hundred to 60.
These remaining sixty are the “worse of the worse” and are being treated better than most inmates housed in the U.S. prison system.

Palm Beach County State Attorney David Aronberg (D), a member of the National District Attorney Association, has recently travelled to Guantanamo Bay in the capacity of a non-government observer.

Aronberg sat down with the Shark Tank the day after arriving from Cuba, and told u that there were “ a lot of misconceptions out there about the prison on GITMO,” adding that the old Camp X-Ray prison that received all the bad press was “not a pretty place” and had since been shut down.
According to Aronberg, both the defense and prosecution in the trial he was observing were composed of military personnel, and interestingly enough, “not in agreement of the process.”
“The prosecution believes that it is constitutional and transparent, and I agree with them. The defense believes the opposite.”
Aronberg was only able to sit on the one trial, saying that the prisoner appeared to be “in good spirits and well-fed” and was seen shaking hands with prison guards. Aronberg also observed a large arrow on the ground that pointed in the direction of Mecca, and that the prisoners were given prayer rugs and Korans.
One disturbing tidbit of information Aronberg divulged about how the prisoners were being treated was that during their trials, the prisoners were allowed to wear headphones and watch movies translated into Arabic on laptops furnished by the government.The attorney’s for the prisoner Aronberg was observing had filed a motion asking the court to allow their client to have a laptop with word processing apps and video editing.

While defense attorneys around the country tend to side with President Obama on closing down the prison, most prosecutors like Aronberg seem to support keeping GITMO open because there isn’t and “adequate” facility to house these terrorists in the United States, or anywhere else.
“There are people that say it would be closed, and they should be tried in federal court in the United States. If you are going to close Guantanamo Bay, you are going to have to have an adequate system to replace it with, and I have not heard of any adequate alternative.”-State Attorney Dave Aronberg
