Florida Governor Rick Scott and members of the Florida Cabinet are thinking about purchasing land for preservation.
The $16.1 million purchase would include 11,027 acres southeast of Tallahassee and if approved it would be the largest acquisition of its kind in more than a decade as reported by News4Jax.Scott and the Cabinet were expected to take up the proposal during a meeting on Tuesday but the meeting was canceled as officials dealt with the threat of Hurricane Matthew. The next meeting is scheduled for October 25.
The land is known as Horn Spring Woods and it contains 10 natural springs, has nearly 10 miles of frontage along the St. Marks River and it would help create an environmental corridor linking the St. Marks River Preservation Park to the north, the Fanlew Preserve and the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area to the east, and the Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park to the south.

Scott’s spokeswoman Lauren Schenone said the following in an email about if the governor would support the acquisition:

Money for the deal with Salt Lake City-based Natural Bridge Timberland, LLC would come through the Florida Forever conservation program.
If acquired the land would be overseen by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Recreation and Parks as an extension of the Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park.
