There has been yet another rare coming together of Florida Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress. The entire Florida congressional delegation, including both Senators Marco Rubio (R) and Bill Nelson (D), voted in favor of the latest House Appropriations bill.
H.R. 5325, the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act, saw many Freedom Caucus Conservatives push back against the government spending bill, but Florida politicians had to weigh in on a much more pressing issue that has become political in nature, funding the effort to eradicate the Zika virus. While Florida House members like Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), Carlos Curbelo (R), Frederica Wilson (D), and Mario Diaz-Balart (R), have all joined together to call attention to the virus, Senator Marco Rubio and Rep. Patrick Murphy (D) have been bashing each other over the head about the spread of the virus in their contentious U.S. Senate race.
“As the number of Zika cases in Florida continues to rise, long-awaited federal funding will finally be provided. This is a tremendous victory for the South Florida delegation who has tirelessly worked together, from both sides of the aisle and both chambers, to raise the importance of this issue and help resolve it. I’m proud of the work my colleagues and I have done to spread awareness about this critical issue and get the right amount of funding we need to fight Zika.”-Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R)
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Both men, who have been accusing one another of not doing enough to raise awareness and the necessary federal dollars to combat the baby-debilitaing virus, are now on record of supporting the same government funding bill that has a significant carve out further efforts to eradicate the virus.
Now on to the next political attack.
On the same day the Zika funding bill was passed, both chambers of the U.S. Congress voted to override President Obama’s veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, aka the 9/11 bill. The only members of the Florida congressional delegation that sided with the president and voted to uphold his veto were Democratic Reps. Alan Grayson, Frederica Wilson, and Lois Frankel.
