Donald Trump’s recent “birther” remark that President Obama was indeed born in the U.S., is not enough to hold back his detractors. Democrats still believe the billionaire Republican presidential nominee is nothing more than a disingenuous “bigot.”
Here is what Trump said:“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it. I finished it. You know what I mean. President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again. Thank you, thank you very much.”
Almost immediately after Trump made the statement at a campaign rally in Miami, members of Florida’s Democratic House Caucus went on the attack.

The always-colorful Rep. Alcee Hastings (D) said that Trump has refused to take responsibility for “his bigoted and divisive attacks.”
His colleague, Rep. Frederica Wilson (D) (pictured), who never backs away from a good fight on race and perceived inequality, also shared some sharp jabs at Trump.“One short statement coupled with lies and no apology won’t do anything to reverse the five years Donald Trump spent pushing his racist birther agenda. At this point in the campaign, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Donald Trump has refused to take any responsibility for his bigoted and divisive attacks. Our community has come too far and fought for too long to let Donald Trump get anywhere near the White House, and reverse all the progress that we have made.”- Rep. Alcee L. Hastings
Yesterday’s attempt by Donald Trump to hide his five-year long obsession with questioning the legitimacy of the President of the United States was shameful. He showed no regret or remorse. Instead, he tried to spread even more lies. We’re still waiting on an apology.” –Rep. Frederica Wilson
Even state Senator Arthenia Joyner (D-FL) joined in the birther dog pile against Trump, saying that Trump “ perpetrated a racist conspiracy theory.” Joyner also said that Trump peddled “a bigoted attack in an effort to delegitimize our country’s first black president.”
Donald Trump is not going to with the black vote. This is a given.
What Trump is trying to do is mitigate the possible damage that he may have caused himself with white voters when he questioned Obama’s birthplace.
While most Republicans are happy to Trump get past the issue, Democrats see this as an opportunity to revive the birther argument in hopes that it will hurt the Republican presidential nominee. The goal here is to damage Trump enough so that Hillary Clinton’s unpopularity is overshadowed by his so-called “racist” and “bigoted” ideology and candidacy. This is Divide and Conquer Politics 101
