With the Zika virus spreading throughout south Florida, both Republican and Democratic elected officials are waiving their proverbial political black Raid flags in an effort to draw awareness to the growing mosquito problem.
Former DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) held a Zika townhall meeting at the Southwest Focal Pointe Senior Center in Pembroke Pines, Florida, where she educated seniors on the real threat Zika virus poses to south Floridians.Because of the thousands of daily travelers who visit the state from Latin American countries, Florida is ground zero of the spread of the virus in the U.S.
Wasserman Schultz, who sits on the House Appropriations Committee, pointed out that even thought the “symptoms of Zika are not serious, “senior citizens are especially vulnerable to an illness” simply because their resistance levels to diseases have lowered over the years.

During her talk with seniors, Wasserman Schultz said blamed House Republicans for the lack of funding to combat Zika, saying, “the Republicans sent us home, and we are in a congressional recess right now,” and then adding that she and others members of the House Democratic caucus have called on Speaker Paul Ryan (R) to reconvene session to “at least take up” a bill that would help with funding efforts aimed at addressing the Zika virus problem.
Wasserman Schultz also says that the reason President Obama doesn’t have a Zika-funding bill on his desk is because Republicans decided to attach unrelated political “riders” that have nothing to do with funding Zika.Never one to leave out any Republican when on the warpath, Wasserman Schultz said that right here in Florida, everyone should “listen with a skeptical ear” when listening to Gov. Rick Scott (R) talk about state efforts to combat Zika.
During a press conference with reports at the conclusion of the town hall, Wasserman Schultz addressed Senator Marco Rubio’s recent remarks that Zika-infected pregnant women should not be allowed to have an abortion, and reiterated the ongoing Zika-funding struggle in the Congress.
