Because Rep. Curt Clawson (R) announced that he was leaving the U.S. Congress due to his father’s failing health, his Republican-leaning congressional seat has become one of the most hotly contested primary races in Florida.
Whoever wins this GOP primary race will be the next member of the U.S. Congress.There are three candidates running to replace Clawson-Chauncey Goss, Dan Bongino, and Francis Rooney.
Rooney has a lot of money, and is garnering support from the establishment wing of the Republican Party. Rooney has received the support from Governor Rick Scott and now from former U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R).

Bongino ran for Congress in Maryland and lost. He recently announced that conservative U.S. Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rand Paul(R-KY) had endorsed his congressional campaign.
Goss, the son of former CIA Chief Porter Goss, is making a second run for congress in this same district.
Goss ran and lost to Trey Radel in a contested primary race back in 2012. Radel’s subsequent resignation from Congress led to Clawson running for his then-open congressional seat.So why are these three guys running for Congress in southwest Florida?
Some will make the argument that Rooney is just a bored multi-millionaire that wants to buy a congressional seat. Others will say that Bongino is just a consummate political opportunist and candidate who just wants to hold office anywhere.
As far as Goss is concerned, maybe he just thinks that he is entitled to the congressional seat because he already ran for the seat?
Goss could have an advantage over Rooney and Bongino when it comes to name recognition, but needs to raise the money to be able to back that advantage.
