If Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) has ever had to worry about re-election to her very safe Democratic-leaning congressional seat, it is now.
Back in 2012, GOP congressional candidate Karen Harrington gave Wasserman Schultz a run for her political money, but in the end, Wasserman Schultz prevailed with a 20-point victory in the general election.2016 is different. A lot different.
Wasserman Schultz is currently facing a possible ouster as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, but the real challenge to her reign of power is her Democratic congressional primary opponent, Tim Canova.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Like Wasserman Schultz, Canova is a big liberal. Not much daylight between these two, except for maybe on trade.
Canova has been able to capitalize on the whole Bernie “Feel the Burn” Sanders phenomena by garner hundreds of thousands in campaign donations, simply for running what appears to be a very ‘burning’ campaign.
It doesn’t hurt that Canova was recently endorsed by Sanders himself.Canova appeared on Newsradio WIOD with Fernand Amandi to talk about his race against the head of the DNC, and the $2 million or so campaign dollars his campaign has received.
Canova and Wasserman Schultz are running neck-and-neck in fundraising, as Federal Election Commission reports show that Wasserman Schultz has raised $1,774.269 through April.CANOVA: “The day he endorsed me, we raised a quarter-million dollars in one day. We’re quickly approaching $2 million now raised.”
AMANDI: “Wait, let me get that straight; you’re close to the $2 million mark? … I want to understand what this Sanders effect is all about in terms of its impact on your fundraising. You had been reported to have raised just a bit over a million dollars prior to Bernie’s endorsement. Are you suggesting that since then in just less than a week’s time, you’re at almost $2 million?”
CANOVA: “Well, I’ll say we raised about $1 million in the first four months. By the time Bernie endorsed us, we were probably up at about $1.2, $1.3 million. Since then we got a big kick of several hundred thousand, and that puts us closing in on $2 million now.”
Expect this Democratic primary race to get as ugly as the Senate race between Reps. Alan “Angry” Grayson (D) and Patrick Murphy.
