On Friday the Obama administration is expected to issue a decree that will allow transgender students in public schools the right to use whichever bathroom that corresponds with his or her gender preference.
The New York Times was the first to report the story and stated they were advised late on Thursday.A letter to school districts will be sent out on Friday signed by Justice and Education department officials. It will contain what schools should do to ensure that none of their students are discriminated against.
Attached to the letter, the Obama administration includes a 25-page document describing “emerging practices.” They include installing privacy curtains or allowing students to change in bathroom stalls.

If schools do not comply the letter states they would face lawsuits or lose federal aid.
This move is certain to draw a lot of criticism especially from Republicans. The federal government is trying to dictate local matters and impose their values on communities across the United States that may not agree. It shows Obama’s latest overreach of power.
Courts have yet to settle the question of whether the nation’s sex discrimination laws apply in matters of gender identity yet administration officials think they have the upper hand. This week North Carolina and the Justice Department sued each other over a state law restricting access to bathrooms, locker rooms and changing rooms.
