Even though Senator Marco Rubio lost his home state of Florida to Donald Trump by 20 points in the 2016 Republican presidential primary race, Rubio is still one the most, if not the most popular politicos in the state.
With that said, anyone Rubio supports in any given state or federal race will reap the grassroots and fundraising support that such an endorsement brings. While Rubio hasn’t formally endorsed his close amigo, Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera, in his 2016 U.S. Senate bid, a full-throated endorsement may be around the corner.
When Lopez-Cantera first jumped in the race, Rubio walked him around to key Washington, D.C. players, as well as accompaning him into the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Now there is news that Rubio will be headling a fundraiser for Lopez-Cantera at the NRSC in May, which would make anyone believe that an endorsement is imminent.
Lopez-Cantera is currently wrapped up in a tight primary race where no one candidate is considered a consensus frontrunner. Rep. David Jolly (R) touts this frontrunner status because of a few public opinion polls that have him edging out the rest of the field of candidates.
Team Jolly has dispelled the rumors that Rep. Jolly is going to leave the Senate race and run for reelection in his congressional seat instead.“Jolly is focused on passing the Stop Act, doing his day job, and winning the U.S. Senate race.”-Sarah Bascom
Another candidate that is considered as the frontrunner because of the conservative grassroots support he has garnered, but mostly because of the campaign cash he as amassed, is Rep. Ron DeSantis (R).
DeSantis has mucho dinero in the bank-several million.
The other candidates in this Senate race are former CIA officer Todd Wilcox, who could bankroll his campaign, and has been pushing the fact that he has been able to win a couple regional grassroots straw polls.
Remember, back in 2009-2010, then-Senate candidate Marco Rubio put together a string of straw poll wins on his way to defeating turncoat Charlie Crist in the general election.Carlos Beruff, the millionaire builder from west Florida, is blitzing the air wave, ala Rick Scott in 2010. Team Beruff (Rick Scott’s old team) believes that the same tactic of getting on air early will help elect their candidate.
It may work again.
Beruff, like Wilcox are very likeable and could pose a significant challenge to Lopez-Cantera, DeSantis, and Jolly.
Again, money talks, and both Beruff and Wilcox have plenty of it.
