The Washington Redskins’ case over their trademark may go to the Supreme Court.
According to CNN, the NFL team, who conducts business under the name Pro-Football, Inc., filed the petition on Monday. In 2014 the Redskins were told by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office the team could not trademark its name because federal law prohibits the registration of anything “scandalous, immoral, or disparaging.”
The team saw another chance when in December when a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the Slants, an Asian-American rock group that wants to trademark their name. That case challenged the same piece of the U.S. law that the Redskins’ case does.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
But the government has asked the Supreme Court to overturn that ruling, and now the team is asking to have their case heard alongside the Slants’ case.
Redskins team owner Daniel Snyder has insisted the name is not offensive to Native Americans even though some Native American groups have fought the trademark in court. President Obama has urged the team to change their name.
