On Saturday the Pentagon announced the United States is transferring nine detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Saudi Arabia.
The transfer will bring the number of prisoners there to 80. President Barack Obama has promised to close the prison even though he has faced a lot of opposition. The Defense Department expressed gratitude to the kingdom in a statement on Saturday:
The United States is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its humanitarian gesture and willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
They also identified the men as: Umar Abdullah Al-Hikimi, Abdul Rahman Mohammed Saleh Nasir, Ali Yahya Mahdi Al-Raimi, Tariq Ali Abdullah, Ahmed Ba Odah, Muhammed Abdullah Muhammed Al-Hamiri, Ahmed Yaslam Said Kumn, Abd al Rahman Al-Qyati, Mansour Muhammed Ali Al-Qatta and Mashure Abdullah Muqbil Ahmed Al-Sabri.
During his first week of presidency Obama signed an executive order to close the prison. It also marked a decisive break from his predecessor, George W. Bush.
Many have came out in opposition of his decision stating the released detainees will return to the battlefield. It has also been proven time and time again that they have done just that. Most recently Spain announced in February the arrest of four individuals in anti-terror operations in Spain and Morocco. One of the individuals arrested had spent time in Guantanamo.
