On Wednesday the Florida House approved repealing a law dating to 1868 that makes it a crime for women and men to live together if they are not married.
The House vote was 112-5. Five Republicans voted against it. They were Janet Adkins (Fernandina Beach-R), Brad Drake (Eucheeanna-R), Jennifer Sullivan (Mount Dora-R), Charles Van Zant (Keystone Heights-R).The Senate passed the bill last week so it now goes to Governor Rick Scott’s desk.
Rep. Richard Stark (Weston-D) was one of the bill’s sponsors. This is what he had to say:

He also said the issue does not just affect younger singles, it also affects seniors.
I represent communities of seniors, where a lot of them are not technically married. They are living together, but it make more sense financially or for whatever reason like Social Security to not be married. I don’t think that they want to be considered to be violating the law.
Van Zant pointed to religious objections to the repeal. He said:
Who are we to say that we do not at least fear God?
