On Wednesday the Florida House unanimously backed a measure that would provide annual vessel-registration fee discounts for boaters.
The bill (HB 427) was sponsored by Representative MaryLnn Magar (R-Tequesta). It would provide discounts of about 25 percent for boaters who purchased and registered emergency locator devices.Rep. Magar and Senator Joe Negron (R-Stuart) introduced the proposal after Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen went missing in July after steering a 19-foot boat out of the Jupiter Inlet into the Atlantic Ocean. They were only 14-years old.
Under the proposal anyone who purchases an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) device will receive the discount.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard the devices cost between $200 and $1,500.
The Senate companion bill (SB 746) is awaiting an Appropriations Committee hearing.
