Punxsutawney Phil made an appearance this morning in Pennsylvania for the beloved tradition of Groundhog Day.

Phil is known for he renowned ability to forecast the onset of spring. On Tuesday morning he emerged from his burrow and did not see his shadow meaning spring-like weather is right around the corner. If he did see his shadow, that would of meant North America will have cold weather for another six weeks.

The event in Pennsylvania typically brings 30,000 visitors to town. They have been using a groundhog to deliver the weather forecast since 1886. Media coverage of the event started the next year.

Even though the event has been going on since 1886 that doesn’t mean there have not been any bloopers. In 2009 the groundhog bit the hand of then New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and five years laeter New York Mayor Bill de Blasio dropped Charlotte the groundhog. The groundhogs have made it very clear they do not like socialists. De Blasio must have got the hint because he will not be participating in this years event.
