The controversial news outlet Al Jazeera America will shut down on April 30 after only two years on the air.
The decision was announced at a sudden staff-wide meeting on Wednesday afternoon as reported by News4Jax.Al Jazeera America CEO Al Anstey applauded the work done at the channel:
I greatly respect the unrivaled commitment and excellent work of our team, which has created great journalism. We have increasingly set ourselves apart from all the rest, and the achievements of the past two-and-a-half years should be a source of immense pride for everyone.

They do not plan on giving up on the American market in its entirety. A memo indicated they plan on expanding “its existing international digital services” with more information to follow.
The channel’s demise is due to the decrease in oil prices. It has dropped below $30 a barrel for the first time in 12 years. The reason that is significant is Al Jazeera America is owned by Al Jazeera Media Group which is owned by the government of Qatar.
