Armed protesters in Oregon have taken over the Malheur National Wildlife refuge in protest of the federal government. It has been going on since Saturday night when activists and militiamen took over the refuge that was closed for the holiday weekend.According to Fox News, FBI and local law enforcement have been in contact with the group to try to persuade them to leave but group spokesman Ammon Bunder said “they should be constitutional” and not use force to remove them because they would be putting lives at risk.
The protesters have vowed to occupy the refuge for “as long as it takes.”

They are protesting the prosecution of a father and son who are facing jail time on an arson charge for burning 130 acres of land.
Dwight Hammond, Jr. and his son, Steven claimed they lit the fires in 2001 and 2006 to reduce the growth of invasive plants and to protect their property from wildfires. Prosecutors say they were trying to cover up poaching.
They were convicted of the arsons and served their jail time of three years for the father and one year for the son but then the judge ruled their time was too short under federal law and ordered them back to prison for four years each. The decision is part of a decades-long dispute between some Westerners and the federal government over the use of public land.
On Sunday, militia members were decked out in camouflage, warm winter gear, holding guns and guarding the entrance which they blocked off with pickup trucks.
They have also been holding news conferences at the refuge and seeking other supporters on Twitter.
