In Florida there is no law to stop drivers from texting while driving if they are following the other traffic laws. Republican lawmakers want to change that.

A bill has been filed in both the House and the Senate but it has not been scheduled yet for a hearing.

Currently there are only five states who still have texting while driving as a secondary offense.

Representative Keith Perry said he texts while driving and almost did not take the bill. He told News4Jax:

We all do it, and I text and drive. I do it rarely, but I find myself doing that. It was a debate for me whether or not I wanted to take the bill on.
