The Florida state legislature began yet another special session yesterday, this time to deal with further redistricting ordered last month by the Florida Supreme Court. About half of the States 27 congressional districts could undergo some minor geographical work that will probably not have much affect on voter demographics or representation. However several, including 6 districts that cut through central Florida, could change the face and dynamics of our congressional representatives.
Of most concern are the proposed redistricting of CD 5 and CD 10. Congressional district 5 is currently a snake of a district that starts in Jacksonville and slices through parts of 9 (count ‘em 9) counties, including the Northwest corner of Orange County and a sliver of Seminole. A very comfy seat for democrat Corrine Brown. The proposed changes would shift this district North and west from the Jacksonville area, making it a far more competitive seat than what Brown is used to. Democrats may still have the edge here, but could be good news for Republican Conservative Glo Smith, who ran for this seat unsuccessfully in 2014. Smith has announced another run for Brown’s seat. Several democratic leaders are also contemplating a run. Faced with the unpleasant prospect of actually having to mount a campaign has sent Corrine to court to file a lawsuit to stop the insanity and keep unchanged a congressional seat that runs like a rattler through 9 counties. The proposed district change for congressional district 10 poses some serious issues for current Conservative Republican congressman Daniel Webster. CD 10 currently includes parts of Orange, Polk and most of Lake County. Under the changes, CD 10 would gain a good portion of Orange county currently represented by Corrine Brown and heavily Democratic. The change could mean that a traditional republican district now becomes a Democratic district. In fact, Congressman Webster is in Tallahassee this week, to present testimony regarding the proposed changes.
Congressional district 6 currently cuts from Jacksonville along the East Coast to Daytona Beach. Current Congressman Ron Desantis has decided to run for Marco Rubio’s seat in the US Senate, so this is an open seat. The proposed changes would lose some of this area, but add in all of Flagler and Volusia Counties, along with parts of Lake and St. John’s counties, benefiting Republicans nicely; the very popular former Congressman Sandy Adams has announced she is seeking that congressional seat.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Some pretty dramatic changes to Florida’s congressional map and delegation are possible if these proposed changes are approved by the Florida state legislature. Stay tuned.. the drama will continue.
