Florida state senator Don Gaetz (R) is out. He is not going to be running to replace Marco Rubio in the US Senate.
He is considering running for U.S. Congress in Northwest Florida though. It is said Gaetz has his eye on Rep. Jeff Miller’s seat.Gaetz had the following to say about the why he is not running for Senate:
In order for me to be a credible statewide candidate I would have to spend every day between now and election day introducing myself to people across Florida. That would require me having to resign my seat in the state Senate.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
According to the nwfdailynews, Gaetz has no intentions of forfeiting his senate seat and putting his constituents through an expensive special election.
Gaetz said:
If asked why I was leaving the senate, the only truthful answer I could give would be that I was resigning to pursue a political campaign. I believe resigning my seat to do that is wasteful and wrong.
In regards to running for congress, Gaetz said he is going to wait and see if there is a vacancy and unlike if he ran for the senate, if he ran for congress he would not have to resign from his state senate seat.
State senator Greg Evers (R) has also expressed interest in running for Rep. Millers seat.
