Florida Governor Rick Scott went to Washington, DC on Wednesday to discuss a proposal to extend federal funds for hospitals that treat low-income and uninsured patients. He got snubbed.
As soon as he arrived, Health and Human Services Secretary, Sylvia Burwell told him the federal government wants Florida to expand Medicaid and they will not give him $1 billion in low income pools for hospitals.Neither side budged on their positions per the Associated Press.
Burwell indirectly responded to Scott’s lawsuit claiming the federal government is breaking the law by making states expand Medicaid in order to get hospital funds. She said her decision to grant funding was not dependent on whether or not a state expands Medicaid. That was obviously a lie.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Other states who also receive hospital funding from the federal government are keeping a close eye on the feud between Florida and the federal government. Florida’s hospital funds are set to expire on June 30th and are the first to expire out of the bunch.
The federal governments response for giving states less money if they do not expand Medicaid is because the Obama administration will not pay for health care for low-income individuals that would be covered if they expanded Medicaid. That statement is how you can tell Burwell was lying when she said the decision made by the federal government had nothing to do with expanding Medicaid.
Burwell told Gov. Scott he should reconsider his position. She said:it is an important element to providing access to quality health care and reducing hospital costs that are typically passed on to taxpayers.
Where does she think the federal money for Medicaid comes from? It comes from taxpayers as well.
Medicaid expansion is the reason Florida’s House session ended abruptly. Florida State Senators want to expand Medicaid and the House does not want too so they were not able to agree on a budget. Florida legislators will return to Tallahassee for a special session June 1-20th to pass a balanced budget.
