The South Miami City Commission wants to create a new state of “South Florida.” They say they have been ignored long enough by the leaders of North Florida and now they want their own state.
The commission has said leaders in Tallahassee are not doing enough to address concerns about rising sea levels at the southern end of the Florida peninsula.South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard said:
Everyone who lives in Florida knows the northern part of Florida is really a southern state and the southern part of Florida is the economic and social capital of the Caribbean and Latin America. So it really feels like two different states.

Whereas commissioners in South Miami are serious about the idea, not everyone is sold on it. Commissioners in Indian River County would also be a part of the proposed South Florida state and have said they would “be traumatized by becoming part of a state of South Florida.”
Personally, I think the commissioners in South Miami should focus on something that is actually achievable. In order to become their own state the notion would need to be approved by the U.S. Congress and Florida voters. That is not going to happen.
