Unions have been a hot topic in the last couple years. When they were first created they served a very important purpose: to protect workers from harmful work conditions and to keep workers from being paid very low wages. Today they seemingly want to run companies instead of help employees and they are essentially a money raising machine for political campaigns.
The question is: did Walmart send a very clear message to unions by temporarily shutting several of it stores for what they claim to be plumbing problems or are they simply in need of repair. It is my personal opinion as a small business owner, owners of companies should be able to run their companies as they see fit as long as it is according to the law. That includes not being pressured by unions to provide unsustainable wages and benefits to employees and without a lot of government overreach. Even though that is my personal opinion, I am not the only one who thinks that way. Many states and companies are seeing the negative effects of the out of control machine called the “union.” Detroit is a prime example, Florida’s cities crippled by Jeb Bush’s sweet deal cut with union bosses is another. I would even venture to say, Walmart agrees with me.Last week Walmart announced they were temporarily closing five stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and California to fix plumbing issues as previously noted. Officials for Walmart said they would work to reopen the stores which employed about 2,200 people as soon as possible.
They also offered a severance pay package for the displaced employees that would last several months. Which they did not have to do. Our nation is governed by what is called the right to work law. Employers can fire employees for any reason at any time and they do not even have to disclose the reason.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
The National Labor Relations Board, the United Food and the Commercial Workers International Union believe Walmart closed their doors because the store has been the center of work activism. The unions in turn are seeking an injunction to make Walmart reinstate the employees at the five stores (see what I mean about unions thinking they run the businesses?). They are accusing the retailer giant of closing their doors in retaliation against workers for demanding more money. What they do not realize is Walmart is losing money by closing the stores as well but it is always a one sided issue when the unions are involved.
When it comes to Walmart, the only people who know why the stores were closed are the people that ordered them to be shut down. Could it be because of unions? Maybe. . . but I think the loss of revenue is not worth the fight.
