Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is gearing up to announce he is running for President on Tuesday. Whereas his entrance to the race is highly anticipated by some it is not highly anticipated by all. The question is: does he have enough Republican backing to become the Republican nominee?
Paul has a lot of college supporters and he prides himself on firing up the younger generation and getting them involved in his “Stand With Rand” movement. They are vocal and they are noticed and that works out very well for Paul but is that really what matters?Rand Paul has broken the mold and he does not follow the Republicans lead in the Senate on almost every issue. Whereas that might be refreshing for outsiders, insiders consider him the radical black sheep of the party.
Some of the issues he has separated with the GOP in regards to are: he wants to restore voting rights to convicted killers, he wants to stop limit the governments ability to monitor and stop suspected terrorists on U.S. soil and he wants to legalize drugs.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
In the end it is probably going to be his positions on foreign policy that will hurt him. We currently live in a world that is worried about ISIS and thinks Obama’s foreign policy is failing. When Rand Paul was elected back in 2010 Republicans were more interested in reducing the national debt, cutting federal spending and repealing the Affordable Care Act. Paul fit the mold at that time but fast forward five years and that might not be the case anymore.
Republicans are well known for their support of the military and for protecting the United States.
Paul has even sided with President Obama on a few issues. He agreed with Obama’s decision to normalize U.S. relations with Cuba. Paul has also suggested the U.S. should engage in talks with Iran about their nuclear program, adding he would oppose U.S. airstrikes in Iraq to fight ISIS. Rand Paul also want’s to reduce aid to Israel. Even though he has since reversed his position about the airstrikes some would think it was just because he was pressured to do so.Seen sometimes as argumentative and arrogant, Paul has been spending a lot of his time recently attacking other presidential hopefuls. He has also been trying to use his black sheep position to help him by saying Senator Cruz and Senator Rubio expanded the Patriot Act while he filibustered it. In that instance he was stretching the truth. One thing he seems to forget is the men he is attacking have also been his allies in the past.
But then again, politics do not always follow the beaten path and he might very well become the Republican nominee.
We wish him all the best.
