Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) officially announced he is running for President Tuesday morning. It is an announcement we all anticipated and it officially makes him the second Republican to announce he is running. Senator Ted Cruz was the first to announce a few weeks ago.
Whereas Rand Paul might be the second to announce he is certainly not the last. Some of his other Republican opponents are expected to include: Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, Chris Christie and Donald Trump. The libertarian son of Ron Paul announced on his website RandPaul.com:
I am running for president to return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Paul is 52 years old and he is running as an anti-establishment candidate. He is also trying to create a more credible campaign then his father Ron Paul who even though developed a national following failed to win all three times he ran for President.
Rand lives in Bowling Green, KY with wife Kelley and their three sons. He attended Baylor University but did not graduate and Duke Medical School. At the time Duke Medical School did not require medical students to have an undergraduate degree. They have since changed that rule.
Paul is an ophthalmologist who still performs pro bono eye surgeries to this day. Even though he did not hold elected office until getting elected to the Senate in 2010, he has been deeply entrenched in politics all his life. At one point he even took a semester off of school to help his father run for Senate in 1984. He was also involved in two of his fathers campaigns for the GOP presidential nomination. The official presidential launch event will be held at 11:30 am in Louisville, KY at the Galt House hotel.
