Once again President Obama wants to intrude on individual freedom and is attempting to turn the United States into a Socialist society.

On Wednesday Obama suggested in order to counter the influence of money in politics it would be a good idea to make voting mandatory. I on the other hand think it is a horrible idea.

During a town-hall event in Cleveland, Ohio the president said:

Other countries have mandatory voting. It would be transformative if everybody voted – that would counteract money more than anything.

He continued to say:

The people who tend not to vote are young, they’re lower income, they’re skewed more heavily toward immigrant groups and minorities. . .  There’s a reason why some folks try to keep them away from the polls.

Per CBS, get-out-the-vote efforts are a very expensive part of political campaigns and yet the voter turnout remains low. During last year’s midterm elections, the national turnout rate was only 36.3 percent.

As of last year, 11 countries have mandatory voting rules. They include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, Ecuador, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Nauru, Peru, Singapore, Uruguay and Schaffhausen.

Obama said adopting the mandatory voting rules could be a feasible “short-term” solution and for long-term he said it would be “fun” to go through the extensive process of adopting a constitutional amendment.

In fact, a pair of Democratic Senators have already drafted a constitutional amendment that would restore Congress’s ability to regulate and limit how much campaigns can raise and spend for federal elections.
