The scene in Florida was nothing less then status quo. The Democrats and abortion rights groups opposed the bill whereas the Republicans and pro life groups supported it. In the end, the GOP-dominated Health Quality Subcommittee voted 9-4 to approve HB 633.
Originally filed by Rep. Jennifer Sullivan (R), the bill would require woman seeking an abortion to meet with a physician for information prior and to wait at least 24 hours before they could get the procedure.Sullivan stated the bill would allow:
women to make an informed decision versus and unexpected, rushed and pressured one.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Democrats and opponents argued the 24-hour waiting period is not necessary and could be hard on women who live in areas where there is not an abortion clinic.
Rep. Kristin Jacobs (D) said:
A mandatory delay is not something that should be imposed on a woman, because there are lots and lots of procedures, as we know, that happen every day with doctors and there is not a single instance in Florida law or in this country where someone is required to wait, other than having an abortion.
The bill would need to clear two more committees before it can go before the House for a vote.
