As suspected, The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted new internet regulations (net neutrality) backed by President Obama on Thursday even though it was strongly opposed by Republicans.
The new regulations will determine how Americans do business on the internet as well as give the government control of what was until today, a free enterprise. In order to get the plan passed the Democrats made it seem the main objective was to provide fast lanes on the internet which would possibly give opportunities to smaller cash-strapped start up and smaller businesses. But, if one delves deeper into the rules they will find the FCC is now able to put the Internet into the same category as other utilities meaning they be able to regulate and impose taxes on internet services.
Republicans are not happy but they do not feel they will have the votes to challenge the new regulations so they are letting the big Internet companies fight it out in court instead. Some have even went so far as comparing the government internet takeover as Obamacare for the internet. We all know how Obamacare turned out and do not be surprised if this turns into a nightmare as well.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
As some back history on the matter. In 2010 the FCC enacted open Internet rules but it was found in court they did have the authority to do so. Fast forward to 2015 and with some tweaking of the original language by calling the Internet a “telecommunications service” subject to Title II of the 1934 Communications Act instead of an “information service,” here we are again.
By doing same the FCC has drastically expanded their regulatory powers over the industry by requiring providers to act in the “public’s interest.” It also allows the FCC to fine companies that are said to be using unreasonable business practices. Very vague and ambiguous language which would give them a broader range of authority.
The following is FCC Commissioner Ajit Pae’s (R) summary of why he opposed the new regulations: DOC-332280A1
