Keeping true to his word, President Obama vetoed the Keystone XL pipeline bill on Tuesday even though it was passed with bipartisan support.
This veto would be the third one since he was elected president.Obama said the following about his veto:
The Presidential power to veto legislation is one I take seriously. But I also take seriously my responsibility to the American people. And because this act of Congress conflicts with established executive branch procedures and cuts short thorough consideration of issues that could bear on our national interest — including our security, safety, and environment — it has earned my veto.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had strong words for Obama even though the veto was expected. McConnell said:
It is said the Senate will probably vote to override the veto sometime before mid March. So far there is no indication if congressional leaders have the votes to override the veto which requires two-thirds majority in both chambers. It’s extremely disappointing that President Obama vetoed a bipartisan bill that would support thousands of good jobs and pump billions of dollars into the economy. Even though the President has yielded to powerful special interests, this veto doesn’t end the debate.
Even though the President has only used three veto’s to date, it should not come as a surprise because Democrats have controlled at least one chamber in Congress since he was elected. Expect more vetoes to come since the Republicans now hold the majority in both the House and the Senate.
