After a Texas federal judge issued a temporary injunction blocking President Obama’s executive action on immigration, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) suspended the president’s expansion of deportation deferrals.
Republicans are now doubling down on their argument that the funding bill for the DHS must include provisions which undo the president’s executive actions on immigration.Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said:
We cannot and must not establish the precedent that we will fund illegal actions on the hope that another branch of government will intervene and strike down that illegal action at some later point.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Both Republicans and Democrats are now at a stalemate when it comes to funding the DHS and they do not have a lot of time to figure it out.
The House passed a $40 billion bill that would fund the DHS but it included riders that would dismantle Obama’s immigration plan. Since then the Senate Democrats have since repeatedly filibustered the bill stating they wanted a bill that did not contain any immigration riders.
Funding for the DHS is due to lapse after February 27 and the department will be partially shut down. Many Republicans believe partially shutting down the DHS is worth it to show Obama they are not going to accept his now unconstitutional immigration executive actions.
