The Politico’s Marc “Frisbee” Caputo has put out his list of possible 2016 Senatorial contenders who could challenge Senator Marco Rubio for re-election, or not.
Rubio has said that he will not run for President and re-election to the Senate at the same time, leaving many Democrats and Republicans politicians in limbo as to whether or not they will decide to run for a possible open U.S. Senate seat. Here is Caputo’s list:
THE DEMOCRATS:

Patrick Murphy (D-Jupiter): He’s young (31), can raise truckloads of money and does something Democrats typically don’t do in competitive seats: win. First elected to CD-18 in a 2012 squeaker against tea party darling Allen West, Murphy held on to his seat in last year’s Republican wave. But Democrats say it’s a matter of when, not if, he loses this competitive seat. And since the DSCC loves him, expect Murphy to hop into the race in the next few weeks – regardless of what Rubio does.
–Charlie Crist: Once seemingly unbeatable, the Republican-turned-independent-turned Democrat has lost his last two statewide races, for Senate against Rubio and governor against Rick Scott. His pollster, John Anzalone, has told a few Democrats that Crist might be interested in the seat. Another fundraiser said Crist is making calls. But his desire for the office would likely be smaller if he had to face Rubio. A third time loss wouldn’t be the charm for the 58-year-old. (LOL!)
Yes, Charlie Crist is mulling over another run for higher office. Give it a rest Charlie.–U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Weston): Once Democrats realized Rubio was serious about a potential presidential bid, interest by the DNC chair appeared to pick up. Democrats say she’s seriously considering a bid now, especially without Rubio. Last year, allies of the DNC chair wanted Sen. Bill Nelson to run against Scott in the hopes that he would 1) beat the Republican and 2) somehow be able to appoint the 48-year-old to his then-vacant Senate seat (there’s disagreement about who would appoint: the incoming or outgoing governor).
A very upset Wasserman Schultz responded to a SHARK TANK story on a South Florida radio show, stating that she was not going to challenge Rubio in 2016.. Our source for the leak was/is someone very closed to the congresswoman, and has reconfirmed to us that a run against Rubio was, and could still be on the table.
–Miami Beach Mayor Phillip Levine: Independently wealthy, socially liberal and fiscally conservative, and a friend of the Clintons (Bill did a fundraiser for him in 2013), the businessman-turned-mayor hasn’t tamped down speculation about whether he’d run for a 2016 post. Interviewed last month on Miami’s The Gray Zone (880 am) Levine would only say he was running for reelection this year. He also bashed other politicians who don’t have a business background.
THE REPUBLICANS
–CFO Jeff Atwater: The former state Senate president, 56, is a prodigious fundraiser and has received more votes than any Florida politician in back-to-back elections (2010 and 2014). Courted by Republicans in 2012 when then-Rep. Connie Mack’s Senate campaign looked like a train wreck (it was), Atwater decided he should stay put in Tallahassee. Now, however, he’s open to calls from Washington. Bonus: he can seek the Senate seat and, if he loses in 2016, keep his current office.Atwater would be a natural choice, and the money would line up behind him. As Caputo mentioned, Atwater has shown interest in the U.S. Senate, and is said to have been pushed out of the 2012 Senate race by Team Romney.
Here “It’s late. But I share the same deep-seated concern they hold. This is an extraordinary country. It’s an exceptional place on the planet and if we don’t turn it around soon, frankly it will be too late for another generation,” said Atwater. “I think I have a responsibility to sit back (and listen) to these people that I respect greatly and are serious-minded conservatives of this great state to take a hard look at it.”- CFO Jeff Atwater (SHARK TANK)
Caputo also lists former Speaker Will Weatherford, Lt. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, who considering a congressional run in 2014, as well as Rep. Ron DeSantis (R)
If Rubio decides to run for re-election to the U.S. Senate, Rep. Murphy and Rep. Alan Grayson would be the only two Democrats with big enough egos to think that they could beat him.
