President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night will be a very “colorful” speech one, to say the least.
Like all of the other members of Congress, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) will be in attendance at the SOTU, but she is not going alone.Wasserman Schultz is taking as her guests the first gay couple to marry in Florida. Jeff and Todd Delmay, who just tied the knot, were in the middle of moving, when they received a personal phone call from Wasserman Schultz herself.
As they were juggling the packing, caring for their 4-year-old son, Blake, and the inundation of media calls, the phone rang. Again.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the Delmays, who accepted the invitation, were one of the six same-sex couples who sued to be able to wed in Miami-Dade County.
“She’s been a great ally of the gay community for a long time, so to be able to have an opportunity to be with her and be able to thank her in person is really great,” Todd said. “We hope that every same-sex family feels like we have them there with us in our heart. If kids can see their families represented in positive ways, it shows that their families deserve equal respect and treatment.”
Should we expect President Obama to exploit the newlywed gay couple by drawing attention to them while they sit in the audience? Probably.If President Obama does acknowledge the Demays at the SOTU, the move would almost certainly press the Congressional Republican caucus to sit silent and not applaud the couple, leaving their action or inaction, to be criticized by the national media.
