While all of the usual pro-U.S embargo to Cuba suspects came out to oppose President Obama’s announcement that he looks to “normalize” relations with the oppressive Castro regime, one of the staunchest supporters of the embargo, Rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), seems to have flinched, possibly signaling that she’s softening up on the decades-long embargo.
Here is the statement Wasserman Schultz released after Obama announced his policy pivot with Cuba:“Like the President, I too envision a bright future for the Cuban people where their basic human rights are respected and they can access information freely. While I have always been opposed to unearned changes in the status of our relationship with Cuba, I will continue to work with the Administration, my colleagues, and community activists to support policies that benefit the Cuban people and do not further entrench the Castro regime.”
What makes her think that the Castro’s will not stay entrenched, if they offered absolutely nothing in concessions for the President easing and “normalizing” trade and travel restrictions?
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
Wasserman Schultz’s colleagues in the House, Rep Ron DeSantis (R-FL) was a little bit more stern with Obama’s move.
“Alan Gross was unjustly imprisoned by the Castro dictatorship and his return is long overdue,” DeSantis said on Wednesday. “I am happy for him and his family. I am dismayed that, in exchange for the release of Gross, the Obama administration agreed to release imprisoned Cuban spies who conspired to kill Americans, as such an action legitimizes the Castro regime’s coercive tactics. This prisoner swap sends a signal to rogue regimes and actors that taking an American hostage can be leveraged into scoring policy concessions. This makes America less safe and emboldens the dictatorship in Cuba.”
