As we previously reported, on May 28, 2014 the Venezuelan Human Rights and Democracy Protection, H.R. 4587. Senators Bob Menendez (NJ-D) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) were the Senate authors of S. 2142 which passed Monday. The bill will allow sanctions to be imposed on individuals who are responsible for carrying out or ordering human rights violations against the citizens of Venezuela.
Senator Rubio had the following to say about the bill:With these sanctions, we can end the days of Venezuelan regime officials and thugs repressing innocent Venezuelans in their day jobs and then coming to Florida to live in the lap of luxury and splurge Venezuela’s wealth. This is the first step to address human rights violations in Venezuela, and it will be a blow to the hypocrites in Nicolás Maduro’s regime who talk a lot about socialist sacrifice but who themselves are immune from its failures and live in a fantasy world of gold-plated iPads and fancy cars, even though most Venezuelans can’t even find basic necessities like food and toilet paper.
He went on to say:

As Venezuela’s economy and society further deteriorates under the weight of an incompetent, unaccountable and repressive government, failed socialist economic system and dropping oil prices, I believe we are going to see even more repression from Maduro’s regime.
You can watch Senator Rubio commenting about the bill below:It is fitting and appropriate that today, International Human Rights Day, the House of Representatives sends to President Obama this important legislation that sanctions officials of the Venezuelan regime accused of committing human rights abuses. I’d like to thank Senators Menendez and Rubio for working with me to garner Congressional approval for legislation that seeks to deny visas of human right violators, freeze their assets and block their properties in the United States. Congress has acted in a unified and bipartisan manner to send a clear and unequivocal message that the we will not continue tolerate impunity of violations of human rights in Venezuela and we support the calls of democracy and freedom by the people of Venezuela. I call on President Obama and the State Department to vigorously enforce the sanctions against Venezuelan officials swiftly.
