Overwhelmingly the United Nations approved an Arab-backed resolution Tuesday. The resolution called on Israel to renounce possession of nuclear weapons. They were also told to put their nuclear facilities under international oversight.
As reported by the Associated Press:The resolution, adopted in a 161-5 vote, noted that Israel is the only Middle Eastern county that is not party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It called on Israel to ‘accede to that treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce, test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons’ and put its nuclear facilities under the safeguard of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency
The United States and Canada along with others joined Israel in opposing the resolution. 18 other countries abstained. There is one reason why Israel has not joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons: they are constantly under attack. As Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said:

This resolution which was introduced by Egypt was very similar to an Arab-backed effort that did not get approval in September at the IAEA. Israel’s position is that a Palestinian-Israeli peace plan must be established before there is a creation of a Mideast zone, free of weapons of mass destruction. Israel also stated Iran has worked on nuclear arms and they are the real threat. Iran has since denied that allegation.
Whereas General Assembly resolutions do not hold any legal obligations, they do have moral weight because it is the only place where 193 U.N. member states are represented.Former US Congressman and retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel Allen West had the following to say about the moral weight of the UN:
Moral weight? Where was the condemnation of all the uncovered secret tunnels constructed by Hamas into Israel – for one sole purpose? Nope, Hamas will be receiving more financial aid, to do what? And to believe that if Israel lets the UN monitor its nuclear deterrent threat all will be hunky dory – you cannot be serious, unless you are delusional.
If Israel decided not to listen to the United Nations they would be following in the footsteps of their rivals. As we reported in July, Hamas rejected UN Ceasefire and launched a rocket into Israel. Also, it is not the first time the UN has come out against Israel or acted irrational. In June of this year we reported the UN’s blatant disregard for Israel when they said there was “no information to confirm” three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped. Those same teenagers were murdered shortly after.
The United Nations purpose is supposed to be to promote human rights, to provide humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster and armed conflict. Maybe it is about time they start doing their job and stopped attacking Israel.
