Florida State Representative Jimmy Smith is trying his hardest to justify his endorsement of Charlie Crist Republican Richard Denapoli in his hotly contested Florida House District 74 race with conservative orthopedic surgeon, Julio Gonzalez.
In a phone interview with the Shark Tank, Smith said that his endorsement of DeNapoli was based on his supposed “work ethics,” and not DeNapoli’s apparent made up military service.
When asked about DeNapoli’s questionable military service, Smith stated that DeNapoli never told him he served in the Marine Corps, even as DeNapoli sent out a letter specifically stating that he did serve in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
The letter in question was sent out several years ago when DeNapoli was running for Treasurer of the Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC).
DeNapoli also stated on his 2008 resume that he completed a “mini OCS” training course.
When pressed about DeNapoli’s claim to some old friends, and his recent statement that he did wash-out of his initial military training, whatever that actually was, Smith said that just because DeNapoli never received a rank, or completed any basic military entrance program, didn’t mean that he did not serve in the military.Smith added that it was DeNapoli’s effort to want to join that matters.
Say what?
Smith, who comes off as a conservative, continues to back DeNapoli, who in turn is being backed by labor unions and trial lawyers. Gonzalez is supported by Senator Marco Rubio, the Florida Medical Association, and Chamber of Commerce.
Clearly Smith did not adequately vet DeNapoli, and now finds himself trying to defend DeNapoli’s indefensible military service claim.
Could Smith’s endorsement of DeNapoli hurt him in his State Senate bid?
