Florida’s self-described “Congressman with Guts,” Alan Grayson, has just witnessed his amendment to raise the federal minimum wage, shot down by Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Grayson’s amendment, which pushed to raise the $7.25 minimum wage up to $10.10, was defeated by a House vote of 230 to 193.Only 5 Democrats voted with Republicans.
President Obama and friends (Democrats) are trying to make the minimum wage issue a big deal in hopes to mitigate some of the damage that will be done against their brand in this year’s mid-term elections.
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
According to Grayson, “the raise would help 25 million workers nationwide,” and would inject “$22 billion into the economy and creating 85,000 jobs.”
Grayson also contends that the raise “would actually decrease government spending by reducing the need for taxpayers to subsidize profitable corporations that pay poverty wages.”
Grayson’s chief Republican congressional opponent, Navy veteran Jorge Bonilla, had this to say about the defeat of the minimum wage raise:
The suffering of millions of Americans living under the Obama economy will not be alleviated by an increase in the federal minimum wage.According to the CBO, the minimum wage increase to $10.10 an hour would eliminate approximately 500,000 jobs.
That comes out to roughly 1000 lost jobs per U.S. House of Representative. Which 1000 Americans does Grayson want to look in the eye and fire so that his union buddies can have their minimum wage increased?
The only answer is to eliminate tax and regulatory burdens on the private sector job creation.- Jorge Bonilla
