For the first time in 20 years, the Lt. Governor of South Carolina is a Democrat. But Yancey McGill wasn’t elected by the voters — but the Republican-dominated State Senate.
With a resounding voice vote, senators elected McGill to the vacant Senate president pro tempore position. Immediately after the vote, Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell resigned, pushing McGill, a Democrat, into the office that has been held by a Republican since in 1995.McConnell was named the new president of the College of Charleston in March and assumes that office on July 1.
Proving that there is more of a Columbia Establishment Class rather than Republicans and Democrats in the State House, Senate powerbroker Hugh Leatherman moved up in rank yesterday as well.
